CORRECTIVE SERVICES — “2017 INSPECTION OF MELALEUCA REMAND AND REINTEGRATION FACILITY” REPORT

1720. Hon Alison Xamon to the minister representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

I refer to the Inspector of Custodial Services’ report of the 2017 Inspection of Melaleuca Remand and Reintegration Facility, and to concerns raised by the Inspector regarding the lack of privacy afforded to women in the Crisis Care Unit (CCU), and I ask:

(a)  have steps now been taken to ensure the privacy of women in the CCU, particularly women using the toilet or shower;

More damning evidence about poor mental health care for prisoners

Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services and Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC is renewing her calls for the Government to take urgent action toward addressing the mental health needs for prisoners in response to the damning report into prisoner access to secure mental health treatment released by the Inspector of Custodial Services today.

The Inspector’s latest inquiry was prompted by the transfer of two women in horrific circumstances from Bandyup Women’s Prison to the Frankland Centre (the only secure forensic mental health facility in WA) last year.
