Inspector characterises Hakea prison as “overcrowded, over-stretched and over-stressed”

Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Minister for Corrective Services to urgently address serious concerns identified by the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services (OICS) in its latest report, released today.

The report, which details the findings of the inspection of Hakea Prison undertaken in July and August 2018, characterises the prison as “overcrowded, over-stretched and over-stressed.”

PRISON HEALTH SERVICES

185. Hon ALISON XAMON to the minister representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

I refer to the proposal to transfer the delivery of prison health services to the Department of Health.

(1)  Does the government still intend to transfer prison health services to the Department of Health?

(2)  If no to (1), why not?

(3)  If a final decision on this matter has not been made, when does the minister expect this decision will be made?
