Shortfall in training budget may lead to skills shortages

WA is facing the very real prospect of a significant shortfall in its training budget, it has been revealed during Budget Estimates.

Greens spokesperson for Training Hon Alison Xamon MLC said the Government admitted during Estimates there was continued uncertainty over the level of Federal funding WA would receive and that this creates a funding hole which the State Government will struggle to fill.

Ms Xamon said that this created the very real risk of contributing to a future skills shortage.

WA children failed by mental health system - Report

Greens spokesperson for Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called for urgent action to address failings in the WA Mental Health System identified by the Mental Health Advocacy Service in its 2016-2017 Annual Report.     

The Report, tabled in Parliament today, identifies a range of alarming issues with treatment received by children in the WA mental health system.

Mental illness and suicide among seniors to be explored as part of Select Committee into Elder Abuse

Greens spokesperson for Seniors and Ageing Hon Alison Xamon today welcomed the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee into the issue of Elder Abuse.  The motion to establish the Committee, initiated by Hon Nick Goiran, received unanimous support from the Legislative Council.

Greens urge Government to adhere to policies and protect bushland at Shenton Park

The Greens have today called on the Government to adhere to its own planning policies and protect a patch of bushland under threat from development at Shenton Park.

Member for North Metropolitan Region Hon. Alison Xamon MLC said the bushland at the Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital site at Lumnos Street formed an important ecological link between Bush Forever sites at Shenton Park and Underwood Avenue bushlands.

She said the larger bushlands in the area linked Kings Park and Bold Park – two of Perth’s most iconic green spaces.

More services for Trans kids needed to halt suicide rate: Greens

The Greens have today called for more investment in services for Trans children following disturbing research undertaken by the Telethon Kids Institute which found that 50% of Trans kids had attempted suicide at least once.
 
Greens spokesperson for Mental Health said the research made for sobering reading.
 
“On every measure for mental health and risk of suicide Trans children were identified at being at significant risk,” Ms Xamon said.
