Report further proof of need for complete overhaul of WA youth justice system

Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Government to urgently overhaul the State’s youth justice system, following the release of a damning report from the Productivity Commission which shows WA has the worst rate of youth re-offending in the country.

Ms Xamon said the report released this week, which showed 54.8% of young of 10 to 16-year-olds were returned to sentenced supervision, was appalling but not surprising.

Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Government to take urgent action to investigate the serious allegations of mistreatment and potential torture of teenagers held in Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Ms Xamon said that unfortunately while today’s news is heartbreaking it is not surprising.  Only last year the chief inspector released a damning report into the Banksia Hill Detention Centre detailing fundamental failings in the operation of the facility. 

Government must rethink way it does business after Education cuts debacle

Greens spokesperson for Education Hon Alison Xamon MLC has welcomed the announcement from the Premier Mark McGowan that the Government will reverse its decision to close Schools of the Air (SOTA) and revoke a number of other ill thought out cuts to Education, but stresses the Government must now rethink the way it does business.

Ms Xamon said while she shared in the relief of the community which had shown so much outrage over the decisions, today’s backflip must be the last time the Government is forced to back-pedal because of poor decision making on their part.

Ms Xamon said that the cuts came while the Minister continued to pursue the hugely unpopular relocation of the International School of Western Australia (ISWA).

Aboriginal education cuts misguided and short-sighted

Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens (WA) spokesperson for education, has condemned as misguided and short-sighted the Minister for Education’s decision to cut Aboriginal education staff from regional offices.

“It is completely unacceptable for Pilbara, Midwest, Wheatbelt, Goldfields and South West regional offices to be left without any Aboriginal education staff, and for only one Aboriginal staff member to be located in the Kimberley district office”, Ms Xamon said.
