Greens spokesperson for Education Hon Alison Xamon MLC has welcomed the announcement from the Premier Mark McGowan that the Government will reverse its decision to close Schools of the Air (SOTA) and revoke a number of other ill thought out cuts to Education, but stresses the Government must now rethink the way it does business.
Ms Xamon said while she shared in the relief of the community which had shown so much outrage over the decisions, today’s backflip must be the last time the Government is forced to back-pedal because of poor decision making on their part.
Greens (WA) Spokesperson for Education Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Minister for Education to abandon her ill-conceived cuts to education.
Ms Xamon said that the cuts came while the Minister continued to pursue the hugely unpopular relocation of the International School of Western Australia (ISWA).
Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens (WA) spokesperson for education, has condemned as misguided and short-sighted the Minister for Education’s decision to cut Aboriginal education staff from regional offices.
“It is completely unacceptable for Pilbara, Midwest, Wheatbelt, Goldfields and South West regional offices to be left without any Aboriginal education staff, and for only one Aboriginal staff member to be located in the Kimberley district office”, Ms Xamon said.
Greens Member for North Metropolitan Region Hon Alison Xamon MLC has called on the Minister for Education to reverse her decision to cut funding to the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre, calling it “outrageous.”
“This is the latest appalling attack on the education of WA children – and its announcement during the December break was heartless,” Ms Xamon said.
“The Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre is a vital resource for teaching children living in the metropolitan area about biodiversity and the wonders of the State’s unique environment.
Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens spokesperson for Education, today reiterated her call for the Minister for Education to reverse her decision to abolish the School of the Air (SOTA).
“It is clear that quite simply the groundwork has not been done to justify the announcement to close SOTA,” Ms Xamon said.
“We know that no consultation took place before the decision was announced and that as a result the decision has raised more questions than it answers. The fact that this has occurred just before Christmas leaving families distressed is appalling.
