Greens spokesperson for education Hon Alison Xamon MLC has called on the Minister for Education to ensure policies related to addressing violence in schools do not exacerbate risks to vulnerable children.
Speaking in Parliament about the findings of the Coroner’s report into the deaths of 13 children and young people in the Kimberley, Ms Xamon said that it was imperative education policies took into account any potential impact on vulnerable students.
Greens spokesperson for Electoral Affairs Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today introduced legislation to amend the Electoral Act 1907 (WA) to abolish ticket voting and replace it with optional preferential voting both above and below the line.
“Simply put, this Bill will see control of preferences taken out of the hands of parties and returned to the voter where it belongs,” Ms Xamon said.
Greens spokesperson for Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today renewed her call for social work to be included in the health practitioner National Regulation and Accreditation Scheme.
“World Social Work Day 2019 provides an opportunity for us all to recognise the extraordinary and valuable work undertaken by social workers in our community every day.
This work is undertaken with some of the most vulnerable members of our community, and as such, it is appalling that there is currently no form of legal professional registration for social workers in Australia,” said Ms Xamon.
Greens spokesperson for education Hon Alison Xamon MLC has called for investment in school bullying programs that specifically address the risk to vulnerable students, including Aboriginal students, those with disability, LGBTI students and those from non-English speaking backgrounds.
Speaking in Parliament in the lead up to National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on 15 March, Ms Xamon said that bullying can have lasting effects on children and their families, and can impact on mental health and wellbeing, physical health, school attendance and school achievement.
Greens spokesperson for Mental Health and Disability Hon Alison Xamon MLC has called on the Attorney General to act on his promises to reform the heinous Criminal Law (Mentally Impaired Accused) Act as a matter of urgency, and to ensure that these reforms apply equally to people already being held under the Act.
“Ever since this Government was elected the Attorney General has been saying that the reform of this draconian legislation is a priority, yet 2 years have passed and we still have not seen a bill,” Ms Xamon said during a speech in Parliament last night.
