Police co-response teams expansion needs to extend to the regions: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has called for the further expansion of the Mental Health Police Co-Response Teams program – saying more needs to be done to support people living in the regions.

Ms Xamon said she was pleased the trial would expand into Perth’s southern and eastern areas, following successful initial trials in the north-west and south-east metropolitan areas in 2018.

But, she said, the expansion falls short of what is desperately needed.

The Government must invest in tackling the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) crisis in Western Australia, as an important part of addressing the devastatingly high rate of suicide in Aboriginal children, Greens spokesperson for Suicide Prevention Hon Alison Xamon MLC has said.

Speaking in Parliament, Ms Xamon said the Government lacked focus and urgency in its approach to FASD, particularly in light of the Coroner’s report into deaths of 13 children and young people in the Kimberley.

Premier called to support for Federal Royal Commission into violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability

Greens spokesperson for Disability Hon Alison Xamon MLC has backed a call from her colleague in the Federal Parliament Senator Jordon Steele-John for the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability in residential and institutional settings.

Ms Xamon added her signature to a letter to the Premier Mark McGowan, asking him to make his position clear on the proposed royal commission, following the passing of a motion from Senator Steele-John on Monday.

Greens Member for North Metropolitan Hon Alison Xamon MLC has renewed her call for urgent reform to the planning system, following the “extraordinarily disappointing saga” of the Shenton Park Rehabilitation Hospital site development approvals process.

Speaking in Parliament this week, Ms Xamon said the community had fought a committed campaign to save the ecological linkage between Underwood Avenue and Shenton Park Bush Forever sites, only to lose out at the final stage of the process.

Passing of Gender Reassignment Bill welcome, but still much to do for true equality for LGBTIQ Western Australians

Greens spokesperson for Sexuality and Gender Identity Hon Alison Xamon MLC has welcomed the passing of legislation which will mean Western Australians changing gender will no longer be forced to divorce, but stresses there is still much to do to remove all legal barriers to true equality for the LGBTIQ+ community.

Ms Xamon said the Gender Reassignment Amendment Bill 2018, which passed the Legislative Council yesterday, brought WA into line with the rest of the country – and the Federal Marriage Act.
