HON ALISON XAMON (North Metropolitan) [ 5.45 pm ]: I rise to echo the sentiments of the Minister for Disability Services and to endorse the comments of members of the Labor, Liberal and National Parties. I rise on behalf of the WA Greens to also join the voices of my federal colleagues in condemning the comments made by Senator Hanson about people with autism. I also acknowledge the effect that those comments have had on their families.

REFUGEE WEEK

HON ALISON XAMON (North Metropolitan) [ 9.54 pm ]: I rise tonight to acknowledge that this week, between Sunday, 18 June to Saturday, 24 June, it is Refugee Week. For those members who do not know, it is an annual celebration of the positive contributions that refugees bring to Australian society. It also encompasses World Refugee Day, which is today, 20 June. According to the United Nations refugee agency, in 2016 there were 65.6 million forcibly displaced people worldwide. That is an inconceivable figure.

MARC NEWHOUSE — FATALITY

HON ALISON XAMON (North Metropolitan) [ 6.20 pm ]: I rise tonight to acknowledge the life and the passing of one of Western Australia ’s unsung heroes, Marc Newhouse. Many members will have known or met Marc, and I know that some members also worked with him over the decades. A passionate anti-racism and human rights campaigner, Marc was taken from us far too early and his remarkable life ended in February this year after a battle with cancer.

MENTALLY IMPAIRED ACCUSED

HON ALISON XAMON (North Metropolitan) [ 10.16 pm ]: I rise tonight because I wish to speak about the unhappy experience of two of my constituents whom I have been assisting out of my office. Unfortunately, their story is not unfamiliar to me. It is important that we start to talk about these issues. This couple is struggling with the fact that their son is a mentally impaired accused person. That highlights some of the problems in the system. This is a very articulate and committed couple, who recognise that their son has lifelong complex needs.

Cuts contradict children’s right to education: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Education Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today called on the Government to reverse its decision to cut $64 million from the State’s Education budget from 2019.

Ms Xamon said the repurposing of Tuart College and the change of program delivery at Canning College would disadvantage students who needed alternative pathways to university.

“These colleges have for decades played a critical role in assisting students who, whatever reason, may not have satisfactorily completed Year 12,” Ms Xamon said.

“They have been their avenue into university.
