CORRECTIVE SERVICES — TRANSITION SUPPORT — NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME

1060. Hon Alison Xamon to the minister representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

I refer to transition support provided to prisoners exiting prison and young people leaving youth justice detention, and I ask:

(a)  are prisoners and young people in youth justice detention provided support to apply for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS);

(b)  if yes to (a):

(i)  who provides this support; and

(ii)  how many prisoners were supported to apply for the NDIS in 2017; and

(c)  if no to (a), why not?

Hon Stephen Dawson replied:

The Department of Justice advises:

(a) Yes.

(b)

(i)  Adult prisoners are supported by the Department’s Offender Management services, custodial staff, Adult Community Corrections and external providers to apply for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Young people in detention are supported by the Banksia Hill Detention Centre Case Planning team.

(ii) Data is not available in regards to how many adult prisoners were supported as this would require a manual interrogation of every prisoner medical record. There were three young people supported to apply for NDIS in 2017.

(c) Not applicable.
