Ban on political donations urgent in light of Crown scandal: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Gambling Hon Alison Xamon MLC has welcomed this morning’s announcement of an impending Royal Commission into the suitability of Crown to hold WA’s only casino licence – and called on the major parties to get rid of dirty money received in donations from the gambling giant.

Ms Xamon said it was about time Crown was thoroughly investigated and, in the meantime, the WA Government had a responsibility to distance itself from ethically unsound businesses, operating poorly and lacking in transparency.

Failure to invest in mental health services in the community is driving families – and workers – to breaking point

Greens spokesperson for Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has extended her full support to mental health workers stopping work today at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital today, in protest of inadequate Election commitments from the WA Government to improve mental health service provision for children and young people.

Ms Xamon reiterated her concerns that the Government continued to focus spending on costly hospital care, failing to invest in prevention, early intervention and community managed services which stop people from reaching crisis point.

Parliamentary inquiry into WA tent cities needed

Greens Homelessness spokesperson Alison Xamon MLC has welcomed the call from the City of Fremantle for an inquiry into last month’s tent city in Fremantle’s Pioneer Park.

”We should absolutely be looking into what caused the tent city in Pioneer Park,” Ms Xamon said. “Given the greater resources of WA Parliament and that public housing and homelessness services are the state’s responsibility, I am in complete support of an independent Parliamentary inquiry into the tent cities that have popped up across WA.”

Government must re-balance WA mental health system, with key focus on prevention and community support: Greens

Greens spokesperson for Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has welcomed today’s announcement from the McGowan Government that it will invest a further $360 million in the WA mental health system – but expressed concern at the continued lack of spending on prevention, early intervention and the community managed mental health services.  

Ms Xamon said any funding boost for the sector was absolutely needed as it was widely acknowledged that the WA mental health system is in crisis.  

Crown corruption highlights urgent need for donations reform

The Greens say that proper regulation of the gambling industry requires a ban on the industry donating to political parties.

Western Australian Greens spokesperson on Gambling Alison Xamon said:

“Since 2012-13, more than half of all money donated by Crown to political parties in Australia has come to parties in WA.

“Crown has spent nearly $800,000 in WA alone, with WA Labor raking in $312,430 and the WA Liberals taking $437,509.

Worrying lack of rules or requirements for government spending of almost $300 million in grant money

Greens spokesperson for Integrity Alison Xamon MLC expressed serious concerns over the findings of the Auditor General's report into Grants Administration which was publicly released today.

"The Auditor General identified a worrying ongoing lack of rules, requirements or guidelines to assess and fund grants across public agencies, including election commitment grants," said Ms Xamon.

Ms Xamon said that only 2 of the 8 public agencies audited had good grant administration practices across all of the audit criteria.

We will never support Roe 8 and 9 highway extensions and the destruction of precious Beeliar Wetlands: Greens

Greens Member for North Metropolitan Hon Alison Xamon MLC and Greens candidate for South Metro Dr Brad Pettitt have reiterated the Greens strong opposition to the Roe 8 and 9 highway extensions, saying the Greens have no interest in supporting an infrastructure project which destroys the Beeliar Wetlands.

Ms Xamon said her view on the destructive and ill-planned Roe 8 extension had not changed in the many years since the Greens first opposed the proposed road.
