Community shock at scale of development reveals Ocean Reef Marina consultation processes flawed

Greens Member for North Metropolitan Hon Alison Xamon MLC has questioned the adequacy of community consultation processes associated with the Ocean Reef Marina development.

Speaking in Parliament, Ms Xamon said complex planning processes meant the community had been largely kept in the dark about the scale of the development.

OCEAN REEF MARINA — BUSH FOREVER

HON ALISON XAMON (North Metropolitan) [9.46 pm]: I rise because I want to make some comments about the Ocean Reef marina development. Today, I want to speak about my concerns around the community consultation process. The reason that I want to speak about this this evening is that it has been in only the last few weeks that a number of members of the local community have become aware of the huge amount of damage that is about to be done to the bushland in that area as a result of this development. Greens concerns over Planning Bill remain

The Planning and Development Amendment Bill 2020 today passed both houses of Parliament.

The Bill provided some long overdue planning reform, but also created a new streamlined approvals process for large developments that sits outside of regular planning law.

Among a number of other concerns, this Bill allows the Minister for Planning to direct another government agency to do things that would otherwise be illegal.

ENVIRONMENT — NOISE MONITORING — SPECIAL ENTERTAINMENT PRECINCTS

2884. Hon Alison Xamon to the Minister for Environment:
I refer to the Special Entertainment Precincts Reform project, and I ask:

(a)  what ongoing noise monitoring and evidence-based assessment has been, or is currently undertaken in the proposed Northbridge Special Entertainment Precinct ‘core’ and ‘frame’ areas to inform the Government’s decision making;

(b)  could the Minister please specify the location of any and all noise monitoring stations in this area:

PLANNING — PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN SITE — DEMOLITION

I refer to the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority’s plans for the demolition of Princess Margaret Hospital, and I ask:

(a) has an asbestos assessment of the site been undertaken:

(i) if yes to (a), will the Minister please table that assessment, if no, why not; and

(b)  will the demolition of the site begin by December 2020;
