Government must do much more to support vulnerable young people leaving care: Greens

The Government must provide better support for young people leaving out of home care to ensure their successful transition into adulthood, Greens spokesperson for Child Protection Hon Alison Xamon MLC has said, following the tabling in Parliament today of the Auditor General’s Young People Leaving Care report.

Ms Xamon said the Auditor General’s report found 65% of young people leaving care who were eligible for support were not getting it, placing them at greater risk of homelessness and unemployment.

Government must ensure funding certainty for crucially important Men’s Sheds

The Government must provide funding certainty, to ensure the continued success of WA’s Men’s Sheds, Greens spokesperson for Mental Health Hon Alison Xamon MLC has said.

Speaking in Parliament, Ms Xamon said the community-based, non-profit, non-commercial organisation was heading for a funding crisis, as it’s only source of State Government funding runs out in December.

She said originally the peak body had been funded by the Department of Health alone although its work is undertaken in conjunction with up to 9 different Government Departments.

Infill planning for Subiaco must meet community expectations: Greens

Greens Member for North Metropolitan Region Hon Alison Xamon MLC has warned distrust in the State planning system will continue to grow, if infill targets are applied without full community engagement and sound strategic planning.

Ms Xamon said people in the City of Subiaco – as well as the City of Nedlands – were outraged at the heavy-handed way the WAPC has amended Local Planning Scheme consultation documents to greatly increase R-codes across substantial portions of their Cities.

Greens spokesperson for Corrective Services Hon Alison Xamon MLC has today slammed the call by the Corrective Services Minister for Amnesty International to apologise over its concerns about Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Ms Xamon said the lack of evidence available to the Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services (OICS) for its investigation – the result of poor record-keeping at Banksia Hill – reflected an appalling lack of transparency and accountability of the Government when dealing with our most vulnerable children and young people.
