FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE — NON-FATAL STRANGULATION OFFENCE

792. Hon ALISON XAMON to the Leader of the House representing the Attorney General:

I refer to my question without notice 23 asked on 13 March 2018 about non-fatal strangulation, which has now been introduced as an offence in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and the ACT.

(1)  Has the government now considered this issue?

(2)  If no to (1), why not?

(3)  If yes to (1), does the government intend to introduce the offence of non-fatal strangulation into WA?

(4)  If no to (3), why not?

(5)  If yes to (3), when?

Hon SUE ELLERY replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)–(5) The Acting Commissioner for Victims of Crime is consulting on non-fatal strangulation as part of the McGowan government’s ongoing work to develop a package of family and domestic violence prevention reforms.
