YOUTH JUSTICE SERVICES

448. Hon ALISON XAMON to the minister representing the Minister for Corrective Services:

(1)  Does the minister still intend for youth justice services to move to the Department of Communities?

(2)  If yes to (1), when?

(3)  If no to (1), will the minister please advise the reasons why youth justice services will stay in the Department of Justice?

Hon STEPHEN DAWSON replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1)  No.

(2)  Not applicable.

(3)  Cabinet has decided that youth justice services are best delivered through the Department of Justice with additional measures to improve cooperation and collaboration between the Departments of Justice and Communities to reduce youth offending and reoffending and drive better outcomes for vulnerable young Western Australians. A range of measures will be implemented to ensure the best possible cooperation between the Departments of Justice and Communities, including co-location of staff, partnerships on programs and regular joint briefings of directors general to the Community Safety and Family Support Cabinet Sub-Committee.
