Alison and the Greens believe that while people are entitled to choose to gamble, problem gambling is a serious public health issue for many others. All Western Australians are entitled to protection from the social harm that results from gambling problems.
Problem gambling can cause relationship breakdown and family violence, mental health issues and suicide, homelessness, social isolation, business failure, and an increase in crime rates.
Government has responsibility to ensure that effective and adequate harm-minimisation measures are funded, implemented and monitored to prevent problem gambling.
Alison will continue to advocate for maintaining current restrictions on poker machines in Western Australia and to ensure there are adequate services to support people with a gambling addiction. (Refer also to Mental Health).
