DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING — TREE REMOVAL

411. Hon Alison Xamon to the Minister for Education and Training:

(1)  I refer to the answer to question on notice No. 214 regarding the more than 2000 trees removed from school sites in the last five years due to being dangerous, unhealthy or dead, and I ask:

(a)  how many of those trees were replaced by one or more tree plantings of a suitable species;

(b)  does the Department of Education have a policy regarding replacing trees on school sites when they are removed for health and/or safety reasons; and

(c)  will the Minister please table any such policy?

(2)  Will the Minister please table Appendix D of the Primary School Landscape Brief, referred to in that document as Appendix D: Schedule of Trees to Use With Caution?

Hon Sue Ellery replied:

(1)       (a) The Department of Education does not record details of tree replacement species.

 (b) No. While there is no formal policy for replacement of removed trees, the practice is that schools initiate replacement of trees with a suitable species

 (c) Not applicable

(2) Yes. [See tabled paper no 963.]
