Political fundraisers that offer access to Government Ministers trivialise the importance of ministerial positions. Ministers say they have no knowledge of political donations and, if they did, they would never allow major donors to influence Government decisions.
Despite this, party fundraisers which promote or imply special access to Ministers suggest attendees may have some influence over Ministers’ decision-making or discretion. The perception of corruption in Government decision-making processes negatively affects our system of democracy.
My Electoral Amendment (Access to Ministers) Bill 2017 improves the capacity of Ministers to exercise their powers fairly by preventing a political party from selling access to Ministers to raise political funds. It is in the interest of every Western Australian that we protect the ability of Ministers to do so.
Ministerial titles deserve respect and should not be exploited as a perk of a party being in Government.
