BANKSIA HILL DETENTION CENTRE — SELF-HARM, ATTEMPTED SUICIDES AND ASSAULTS

3052. Hon Alison Xamon to the minister representing the Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to Banksia Hill Detention Centre, and I ask:

(a)  how many incidents of self-harm were there in:

(i)  2019 (calendar year); and

(ii)  2019–20 (financial year);

(b)  how many attempted suicides were there in:

(i)  2019 (calendar year); and

(ii)  2019–20 (financial year);

(c)  how many assaults were there in:

(i)  2019 (calendar year); and

(ii)  2019–20 (financial year); and

(d)  how many sexual assaults were there in:

(i)  2019 (calendar year); and

(ii)  2019–20 (financial year)?

Hon Stephen Dawson replied:

(a)       (i) In 2019, there were 145 self-harm incidents and 0 serious self-harm incident.

(ii) During 2019–20, there were 113 self-harm incidents and 1 serious self-harm incident.

(b)       (i) In 2019, there were 2 attempted suicides.

(ii) During 2019–20, there were 2 attempted suicides.

(c)       (i) In 2019, there were:

3 serious assaults against staff;

1 serious assault against other detainee;

75 assaults against staff; and

56 assaults against other detainee.

(ii) During 2019–20, there were:

1 serious assault against staff;

3 serious assaults against other detainee; 46 assaults against staff; and

52 assaults against other detainee.

(d)       (i) There was no sexual assault recorded in 2019.

(ii) There was no sexual assault recorded during 2019–20.
